the posters and designs of Art Chantry

Art Chantry began in the late 1970's, after graduating from Washington University Chantry came to Seattle and started producing some posters. Before that, he worked for the UW and Seattle's music magazine "the Rocket". Chantry's posters and designs were mostly magazine and CD covers, album covers for bands like Nirvana and Hole, book covers and advertising campaigns that are known for the big type and juxtaposed images. Chantry's work was always on low budget, simple as he was representing small and basic clubs, primal theaters and ordinary publications. And that's what made him and Jules Cherest come in contrast regarding to their work that once have been thought to be similar and kind of alike, because cherest, however, was more into high class people and luxurious theaters and dance halls. As for the posters, Chantry's posters were estimated to reach nearly over three thousand posters. Not to mention the countless logos that he produced along with magazine layouts and album covers.
one of the greatest designs of his, is a book cover design called " some people can't surf" by Julie Lasky.

Sometimes chantry would use some old posters like from the 40's or 50's and then he manipulates and reuses them in his way, for instance, just like what he did with the National Safety council poster when he enlarged it, and stripped the word sex into the background.

and there's a poster in which Chantry produced for a bathhouse theatre production of Macbeth, set in the Old West, chantry continues his practice of distributing the subject's gaze this time with blood. 1982.

Even until this period of time, Chantry is still designing and producing art, just for this year a board design was selected as one of the "platinum picks" in Snowboard Magazine for 2010.
